Iceland Population Aging: Age Structure and Dependency Ratios

This article presents population aging in Iceland through broad age-group shares and dependency ratios.

People aged 65 and above represented 15.6% of the population of Iceland in 2024. The population aged 0 to 14 accounted for 17.5%, while those aged 15 to 64 represented 66.6%. The old-age dependency ratio was 24.0 older people per 100 working-age people, compared with a youth dependency ratio of 26.3. The older population share changed by +1.3 percentage points over five years and by +2.3 percentage points over ten years.

Population ages 15-64, % of total population. The share of the population of conventional working age, 15 to 64.

Population ages 65 and above, % of total population. The share of the population aged 65 and older.

Age dependency ratio, old, % of working-age population. The number of people older than 64 per 100 people of working age (15-64).

Age dependency ratio, young, % of working-age population. The number of people younger than 15 per 100 people of working age (15-64).

Age dependency ratio, % of working-age population. The combined number of people younger than 15 or older than 64 per 100 people of working age.
