Sri Lanka Digital Connectivity: Internet Use, Broadband, Mobile and Secure Server Infrastructure

This article presents digital connectivity in Sri Lanka through Internet use, fixed broadband, mobile subscriptions and secure server infrastructure.

Internet use in Sri Lanka reached 54.6% of the population in 2024. Fixed broadband penetration was 8.5 subscriptions per 100 people, mobile cellular penetration was 132.5 subscriptions per 100 people, and secure Internet server density was 449 per 1 million people. Over five years, Internet use changed by +22.6 percentage points, fixed broadband penetration by +1.0, mobile penetration by +6.0.

In the common comparison year 2024, Sri Lanka ranked 158th of 213 economies by Internet use.

Individuals using the Internet, % of population. The share of a country’s population that used the Internet from any device, including mobile phones, in the last three months.

Fixed broadband subscriptions, per 100 people. Subscriptions to high-speed wired Internet access, per 100 people; counts active subscriptions, not unique users or households.

Mobile cellular subscriptions, per 100 people. Subscriptions to a public mobile telephone service, per 100 people; counts active SIM subscriptions, not unique subscribers.

Secure Internet servers, per 1 million people. The number of servers using encrypted (SSL/TLS) connections, per 1 million people — a proxy for the maturity of a country’s e-commerce and secure web infrastructure.
