The analysis summarizes resident and nonresident filing activity across patents, trademarks and industrial designs.
Intellectual property applications in Japan in 2021 included 289,200 patent applications, 364,342 trademark applications and 32,747 industrial design applications. The largest category was trademarks, representing 53.1% of all included applications. Resident applicants accounted for 76.9% of patent filings, 74.0% of trademark filings and 67.3% of industrial design filings. Total included IP applications were equivalent to 5563.0 per 1 million people.
