This report examines how electricity is produced in Bulgaria and how the contribution of each energy source has changed.
Electricity generation in Bulgaria was divided among coal (35.9%), nuclear power (34.7%), other renewables (11.5%) in 2021. Renewable electricity accounted for 22.2% of total output, compared with 43.1% from fossil fuels and 34.7% from nuclear power.
In the common comparison year 2021, Bulgaria ranked 111th of 209 economies by renewable electricity share. The country’s generation mix shifted most strongly toward other renewables during the latest five-year period.
