The intellectual property filing profile of Ecuador in 2021 comprised 1.8% patents, 97.4% trademarks and 0.7% industrial designs. The patent-to-trademark application ratio was 0.02, while the industrial-design-to-patent ratio was 0.39. Over five years, patent applications changed by +9.1%, trademark applications by +36.3%, industrial design applications by +18.4%. Research and development expenditure represented 0.44% of GDP in 2014.
In the common comparison year 2021, Ecuador ranked 50th of 120 economies by total included IP applications.
